Older Americans Month

Celebrated every May, Older Americans Month is led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL). Established in 1963, Older Americans Month is a time to recognize older Americans' contributions, highlight aging trends, and reaffirm commitments to serving the older adults in our communities.

This year’s theme, "Flip the Script on Aging," focuses on the importance of combating ageism to transform how society perceives, talks about, and approaches aging by challenging stereotypes and highlighting the benefits of healthy aging.

"As we celebrate Older Americans Month, NWRC proudly honors the resilience, contributions, and vitality of older adults in our community. This month is a powerful reminder of the importance of the services that support aging with dignity, many of which are made possible through the Older Americans Act (OAA). While the OAA now faces uncertainty at the federal level, our commitment to the older adults we serve remains stronger than ever. At NWRC, we will continue to provide essential care, advocacy, and support—ensuring that every older adult has the opportunity to live safely and independently,” said Executive Director Amanda McDade.

What can individuals do to combat ageism?

  • Celebrate the contributions of people of all ages in the workplace and community.
  • Avoid ageist statements when talking about growing older.
  • Challenge stereotypes and biases.
  • Support intergenerational friendships.
  • Promote fact-based messages about the abilities of older adults and their value to communities.
