Self-employed workers can choose to opt in to the WA Cares Fund to have the same affordable benefits available when long-term care coverage is needed. You must choose to elect coverage by June 30, 2026, or within 3 years of becoming self-employed for the first time.
If you elect coverage, you will pay the current premium rate, which is .58%. That is about $300 per year for the median Washington worker. Each calendar year, you must work at least 500 hours for it to count toward the contribution requirements.
Benefits of electing to opt-in to the WA Cares Fund include:
- Peace of mind: Once you’re vested, you’re insured against long-term care up to $36,500 over your lifetime
- Financial security: Unlike Medicaid, WA Cares doesn’t make you spend down your savings before coverage kicks in.
- Choice: You decide how and where to use your benefits.
If you have qualifying wages for Paid Family and Medical Leave, then you would also qualify for WA Cares. Visit this webpage for more information on eligibility and find forms.
The WA Cares Fund team is providing a webinar called “Basics for self-employed workers” on March 25th from 10:00 am – 11:00 am. You can find information about the webinar and how to register here.
