Every year in May we recognize Older Americans Month (OAM). This is a time to celebrate older Americans, their talents, experience, and the vital roles they play in our communities. “We all rely on the generations that came before us – they taught and raised us.  Even as roles change in later life, they teach us about meaning and value and we in turn give back to them the care they gave us. Celebrating our elders and continuing to learn from each other is part of what Older American’s Month is all about” said Executive Director Amanda McDade.

It is also an opportunity to explore individual needs so people can choose how to continue leading unique, full, and healthy lives. This year’s Older American’s Month 2022 theme is Age My Way. While Age My Way will look different for each person, here are common things everyone can consider:

  • Planning: Think about what you will need and want in the future, from home and community-based services to community activities that interest you.
  • Engagement: Remain involved and contribute to your community through work, volunteer, and/or civic participation opportunities.
  • Access: Make home improvements and modifications, use assistive technologies, and customize supports to help you better age in place.
  • Connection: Maintain social activities and relationships to combat social isolation and stay connected to your community.

NWRC is excited to celebrate OAM with our partner agencies. Our goal is to support the independence, dignity, and health of the people in Whatcom County. If you, your family, or a loved one is needing information or resources, our staff is here to help you Monday through Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.
